#17 – FIELD
6 x 6″, oil on birch
Are there any new shapes? I wonder about that. Seems like everybody who’s anybody has a recognizable shape, or color, or abstraction… Like a blue dog. Or Modigliani’s stretchy people. I like how Klimt was able to blend realism in the hands and faces with flattened abstraction in the clothing and backgrounds. Taken out of context, Schiele’s hands make no sense, seem absurd. But in his paintings, they’re perfect – they represent him.
